Angus came
to us at approximately 8 months of age and was one of the
sweetest, best mannered Collies we ever owned. He was a great PR
representative for the breed, loving everyone and capturing the
hearts of all who met him.
Unlike many
males, Angus loved the puppies born over the years and seemed
to enjoy leading them a merry chase around the yard. He had such
patience with them.
As an older
guy, he was Lord of the Yard,,,,,not wanting to play with all of
the youngsters in their play yard, he had the run of our whole
yard. Each time we would return home, he would be lying in the
side yard near the fence, watching and waiting for our return.
Be it five minutes or five hours, our greeting was always the
same. As he saw one of our vehicles coming up the road he would
get up and come prancing and announcing our arrival with his
tail wagging and his ever beautiful smiling eyes. He would rush
to the gate at the driveway and wag from nose to tail, anxious
for one of us to open the gate. He would then greet either of us
who opened the gate, come sit with us until the vehicle came
through and the gate was being closed. Then he would prance over
to the vehicle to welcome the driver.
His favorite
treat was a raw carrot and he would come to the garage and bark
if we forgot to give it to him. As he took his "valuable " treat
, he would prance away as though we had given him a filet
mignon, lie down and sometimes just hold it for a while before
eating it.
Many a die
hard puppy buyer, convinced there was only one color of Collie
to own, met our loving , beautiful boy and wanted one just like
him.....forget that he didn't have the full white collar so many
pet buyers think so important, and he certainly wasn't a sable &
white.....He sold them on the fact that a Collie is a Collie.
Unfortunately we found out he had a terrible genetic disorder
and stopped using him for breeding or show although he easily
could have finished his AKC Championship. At one of the
Specialty shows, as those who show understand, space is of
premium value and availability. I had put Angus up onto the
grooming table to prepare him for the ring. Oh he was so happy
to be there. Of course the tables and crates were quite close
together and since he was so well behaved, I hadn't connected
him to the grooming arm, he never jumped off the table or fussed
when he was getting his grooming.
However, this one day in
Connecticut, there he was being groomed and having an attitude
of "Look at me" when I had turned away to look for something in
my tack box and turned back only to find my Angus....was gone!
Initially I panicked and then couldn't help but laugh
hysterically as I spotted my very sociable show dog. He was
walking around the room walking from table to table, whether
occupied or not and greeting everyone along the way.
Fortunately, more folks laughed than got upset but he had a
great time.
Although we
never expected him to live this long, he would have been 13 in
July, God Blessed us with this wonderful, loving companion with
a good lifespan. Of course we never have them long enough, we
are just ever so thankful we had him for so many years and to
all of his "friends" human and four footed, he was as loyal and
loving his last day as he was throughout the years. He's now
with many of our Collies who are waiting at the Rainbow Bridge
for us to join them. Good -bye for now our precious boy, greatly
missed and gone only 24 hours......until we get to the Bridge
there won't be a day we don't think of you. We know when we get
to see you again, your welcome will be the same as you prance,
pain free , to the gate to greet us.
Thank you
Shirley and Al for this wonderful Collie.
We will not
say good-bye,,,,,only "see you someday soon". We loved you so
very much and there will never be another like you. Rest well
our friend until we arrive. I'm sure you received a large
welcome home from all of our Collies and friends Collies who
watched you come gracefully to the Bridge, free of pain and able
to prance again.
